IMG_3727Two five member teams from Craig County High School participated in the Area I Envirothon at Natural Chimneys Park in Augusta County on April 26.  Coached by Lara Edwards, Craig County students competed against teams from schools throughout the Shenandoah Valley.  Envirothon is a field-oriented, community based program where students work collaboratively to share their knowledge of natural resources and to solve problems in an exciting outdoor competition.

Local students participating in Envirothon included Meaghan Looney, Will Looney, Autumn Huffman, Brianna Charlton, Michael Hinson, Jake Bostic, Nathan Scott, Cole Saunders, Cameron Crush, and Michael James.

Representing Mountain Castles Soil and Water Conservation District, Craig County teams rotated through stations, each focusing on a different natural resources topic.  Students shared their knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatics, and invasive species.  In addition, each team gave an oral presentation where they explained a management plan that they had developed for a farm dealing with invasive species.

Envirothon is an annual competition sponsored by the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts with financial support from Dominion Resources.
