Trevor Smith and Victoria Johnston of Craig County High School participated in Youth Conservation Camp July 12-18 at Virginia Tech. Smith and Johnston joined 55 high school students from across Virginia for a week of conservation education, field trips, and outdoor activities.
Highlights of the week included electro-fishing on Claytor Lake, a tour of the turf management operation in Lane Stadium, and tours of Virginia Tech’s dairy, swine, and wood products centers. Campers also visited the Mountain Lake Biological Station and hiked to the Cascades. The last full day of camp featured a canoe trip on the New River.
This was the 39th year of Youth Conservation Camp, which is sponsored by the Virginia Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts. Mountain Castles Soil & Water Conservation District presents two annual camp scholarships for students from Botetourt County and Craig County. In addition, Tim Miller, the Education Coordinator for Mountain Castles SWCD served as a camp counselor this year.
